Momentum Electric Marine Hits the US Market
Momentum Electric Marine made a splash in the US electric boating market with the introduction of their M10 10kW / 20hp electric outboard in 2025. The M10 is the first viable out-of-the-box solution for customers who want to make the switch to electric and get their dinghies up on the plane. Plus, it comes at a fraction of the cost of 10kW electric outboards from competitors like Torqeedo and ePropulsion. Momentum also makes the M6, a 6kW / 9.9hp version of the M10 that's providing a compelling alternative to the ePropulsion Navy Evo and Torqeedo Cruise 6kW models.
The people behind Momentum clearly know what they're doing. They spotted a gap in the market and delivered a well positioned product. Before the M10, there was no electric outboard in that size range that could get a dinghy up on the plane; they'll dominate the 10kW segment until their competitors find a way to catch up.
Smaller Electric Outboards & Momentum Electric Marine
The market for electric outboards in the 1kW / 3hp range is becoming saturated. The Torqeedo Travel and ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus have dominated the 1kW size range for years. Now, they're facing competition from the Remigo One and TEMO 1000. The Elco Edgemere also entered the market this year, plus lower cost alternatives from companies like Newport and Bixpy.
The 1.6kW / 5hp Torqeedo Travel XP was released in 2024 as the first light weight (<50 pounds) electric outboard with an integrated battery above 1kW power output. They've sold like hot cakes this year, with many customers wanting extra power, but still the convenience of portability. Other manufacturers have taken notice; the Remigo One Neo was released in 2025 and offers a max power output of 1.5kW. Until the release of the Neo (and just like the Momentum M10 in the 10kW size range and the ePropulsion eLite in the 500W size) the Travel XP had no real competition. But now, the Momentum U2 is set to hit the US market in Q4 2025. What should we expect?
The Momentum U2 Electric Outboard
The Momentum U2 is a portable electric outboard with a max power output of 2.5kW / 5 hp. What sets it apart from other portable electric outboards is its max power output; it's set to become the most powerful electric outboard on the market that's designed to be portable with integrated battery that sits right on top of its shaft. The battery comes in at a 1.4kWh capacity, which is on the higher end of what we see in battery capacity in this size range. Let's look into what sets the Momentum U2 apart from its competition.

Ultra-Portable Design Without Compromising Power
The first thing that sets the Momentum U2 apart is its weight—or lack thereof. Even though it's much more powerful than other portable electric outboards, the weight is similar or less than other 1kW electric outboards on the market. The combined weight of the motor and battery is about 37.5 pounds in short shaft and 38.5 pounds in long shaft. This breaks down to about 17.5 pounds for the battery and 20/21 pounds for the shaft. The removable transom bracket (like what we've seen with the ePropulsion eLite, Remigo One, and Temo 1000) weighs about 4.5 pounds.
That means carrying it down the dock, stowing it in the back of your car, or mounting it on your dinghy’s transom is genuinely easy. For anyone who has ever struggled with a heavy gas outboard, the difference is night and day. Instead of needing two people to lift the engine or worrying about spilling fuel, you can move the Momentum U2 comfortably on your own.

Range and Run Time Data: What's the Range of the Momentum U2?
Momentum has released their testing data on range and run time. Missing from the charts below is the power output at each speed, which would be helpful to have. We'll do our own tests as soon as we can get our hands on a Momentum U2, but this is a great starting point.

Smart Battery System with Quick-Swap Convenience
Momentum designed the U2 with a quick-swap battery and cable free connection that makes extending your time on the water simple. Say goodbye to lining up pins; just slide the battery right on to the shaft. We expect one battery to be enough for most customers, but if you need a second, it will be incredibly simple to swap em out!
We also love how the display is built into the battery and not the motor. You need to check the state of charge (SOC) of most electric outboard batteries every three months, and with most electric outboards (like the ePropulsion Spirit and Torqeedo Travel) this means plugging the battery into the motor. While the literature from Momentum Electric Marine doesn't specifically say that you can turn on the battery without the motor, it would be logical that you can, allowing you to check the battery SOC without the motor. The only other removal battery for portable electric outboards that allows you to do so is the TEMO 1000 battery.
The U2 Battery strikes the right balance between energy storage and portability. It’s small enough to carry as a spare but large enough to provide real runtime for everyday use. And unlike gas, you don’t have to worry about smells, leaks, or maintenance—just charge, click, and go.
Integrated Three Position Tiller Handle
The tiller of the Momentum U2 can be folded all the way up, all the way down, or perpendicular to the motor. Raising the tiller handle all the way up allows you to get it out of the way if needed. When you need to carry the motor, simply fold the tiller handle all the way down, and carry the motor from the tiller. The Remigo One is the only other portable electric outboard with a tiller-carry design. We've used it and we love it- well done Momentum and Remigo!

Remote Throttle, Remote Steering and Steering Lock
The standard setup for the Momentum U2 is the tiller controlled version, but it's also possible to use it with the Momentum MT-1 top mount remote throttle or the side mount Momentum MT-2 remote throttle. Pair these with a standard teleflex steering system, and you're controlling your U2 from the helm with a wheel and a throttle and not the tiller. Sailors will be happy to know that it's also possible to lock the steering centered and use the boat's rudder to steer (with both tiller or remote versions).

Power and Performance You Can Count On
With a 5 hp equivalent power rating, the Momentum U2 is well-suited for dinghies, tenders, sailing auxiliaries, and small workboats. It’s powerful enough to get you where you need to go, but light and efficient enough to carry anywhere. Until the U2 came to market, boaters who wanted a true 5hp outboard needed to stick with gas and all the headaches that come with it. Now, there's an excellent electric choice on the market in the 5hp power rating.
And because it’s a direct-drive electric motor, you’ll enjoy the benefits that all electric outboards share:
-
Whisper-quiet operation.
-
Instant torque at the throttle.
-
No winterization or complicated maintenance.
-
Zero emissions at the point of use.
For many boaters, that means replacing a loud, fussy 2.5–5 hp gas outboard with something cleaner, easier, and more reliable.
Durable Construction
Like the Momentum M10 and M6, the U2 appears to be designed with very little plastic in its construction. In full transparency, we haven't gotten our hands on one of these motors in person (as of September 2025), but we have used an M10. To us, the less plastic involved the better. That's part of the reason we're such big fans of the Remigo One and its aluminum unibody. Only time will tell how durable the U2 is, but by the looks of it, the U2 appears to be more durable than most other electric outboards on the market.
Momentum U2 FAQ
Who Should Buy The Momentum U2 Electric Outboard?
The U2 is a great choice for boaters who want an electric outboard with more than 3hp / 1kW of power, but still want the portability of a motor weighing less than 40 pounds with its integrated battery. The 1kW / 3hp electric outboards are great for small sailboats less than 1000-2000 pounds, small dinghies, and small freshwater fishing boats. Customers with bigger sailboats (over 2000 pounds or larger dinghies and freshwater fishing boats that are often loaded with 3+ passengers will be happy to have the extra power from the Momentum U2 electric outboard. It's also a great choice for boaters who often need to fight wind, current, or waves; 1kW electric outboards can leave something to be desired when conditions get marginal.
What's the Price of the Momentum U2 Electric Outboard?
US pricing for the Momentum U2 hasn't been released yet, but we can get an idea from it's price in the UK, which is listed at £2450. Electric outboards are typically less expensive in Europe compared to the US. If the U2 follows this trend, we'd expect the US price point for the U2 to come in between $3000 and $4000 (but we can't make any promises)!
When will the U2 be available in the US?
To the best of our knowledge, the Momentum U2 will be available in the US in late Q4 of 2025 or early Q1 of 2026. You can definitely get one before the start of the 2026 boating season in the US!
