The Momentum U2 represents a shift towards the new generation of portable and powerful electric outboards. With a maximum power output of 2.5 kW / 5 hp, the U2 has more than double the power of most 3hp electric outboards, and at 40.5 lbs, it weighs even less than most of its less powerful competitors.

Please keep in mind that the content we filmed on the Momentum U2 was with a pre-production version of the unit. There will be small changes and improvements to the production unit.

VIDEO: First Looks at the Momentum U2

Momentum U2 Overview

The Momentum U2 is a compact, lightweight electric outboard motor built to replace small gas engines with clean, quiet, and efficient electric power. With 2.5 kW of output (up to 5 HP equivalent), it delivers smooth, reliable propulsion for small boats without the noise, fumes, or maintenance of gasoline.

Key Features

Power. The 2.5kW / 5hp Momentum U2 has 2.5x the power of most 3hp electric outboards on the market today, but in the same portable form factor. The extra power expands the applications suitable for a portable electric outboard. The Momentum U2 is a great choice for sailboats over 1000 pounds, freshwater fishing boats, and customers with dinghies that want to travel faster than the ~5 mph that's possible with 1kW / 3hp electric outboards.

High Quality Build. Other than the battery housing, there is very little plastic used in the construction of the U2. Momentum is a relatively new company and the U2 is brand new, so only time will tell how well the motor holds up in the real world, but it does appear to be a very high quality and durable build.

Best in Class Weight. The weight, or lack thereof, of the Momentum U2 might be its most impressive feature. The transom bracket weighs 4.5 lbs, the battery weighs just 17.5 lbs, and the motor, in short shaft, weighs just 20.5 lbs. That adds up to a combined weight of just 40.5 lbs; both the combined weight and the weight of its individual components are significantly less than the ePropulsion Spirit 2 (the U2's only direct competitor on the US market) as well as most less powerful electric outboards, such as the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus, Torqeedo Travel, and Torqeedo Travel XP.

Cable-Free Battery Connection & HUGE, easily accessible pins. There's no cable needed to connect the battery to the motor; simply slide the battery on to the U2's shaft, and the physical, power, and data connections are all made. There are 6 power and data pins on the motor side that connect power. These pins are extremely oversized and easily accessible. Whereas small data pins on other electric outboards could break easily and could be almost impossible to clear if corroded, the pins on the U2 are very unlikely to break and very easy to clean in the event that they do become corroded.

Separate Transom Bracket. The Momentum U2 has a separate transom bracket, which is designed to be left on your transom or motor mount permanently. There's no need to undo the transom clamps every time you want to take your motor on and off your boat; simply slide the shaft on to the bracket and you're ready to hit the water!

On-Battery Display. Unique to the Momentum U2 is that the display is built into the battery, not the tiller or somewhere else on the motor. The main benefit here is that you're able to see the state of charge on the Momentum MB-2 battery without having to attach it to your motor.

Momentum U2 Electric Outboard FAQ

When will the Momentum U2 be available?

We are expecting the first batch of Momentum U2 electric outboards to be delivered to customers in May of 2026. We highly recommend pre-ordering a U2, as initial US stock will be very limited.

What is the Momentum U2 price?

The tiller version of the Momentum U2 is set to retail for $3999 before shipping or tax. This includes the motor, battery, charger, transom bracket, propeller and one kill switch.

Can the Momentum U2 be used with external or third party batteries?

To the best of our knowledge, Momentum Electric Marine has plans to make an external / third party battery adapter cable, but it is unclear when this will be released. We do not expect this cable to be available until Q4 of 2026 at the earliest.

Is the Momentum U2 available in a remote version?

The U2 will be available in a remote version, although it is unclear when this version will be available in the US. We do not anticipate receiving any U2 remote versions until after the summer of 2026.

How much does the Momentum U2 weigh?

The Momentum U2 is one of the lightest electric outboards on the market! The short shaft version of the motor weighs 20.5 pounds, the battery weighs 17.5 pounds, and the transom bracket weighs 4.5 pounds. The combined weight of a short shaft tiller U2 is 40.5 pounds.

Can the Momentum U2 get my boat up on the plane?

While we have yet to do our own testing, Momentum's testing data implies that the U2 can get a small dinghy up on the plane, at least with one person on board. Please note that the ability to plane depends on numerous factors and we cannot guarantee that the U2 can get your boat on the plane.

What are the charging options for the Momentum U2 Battery?

Momentum has not announced solar, DC or fast AC charging options for the U2 Battery at this time. The standard charger plugs into a regular wall outlet. If you are interested in the Momentum U2 and need another charging option, please contact us and we will check with Momentum to see if there are any updates.
