The Torqeedo Travel XP is the first 1.6kW/5hp equivalent electric outboard on the market with an integrated battery that sits on top of the shaft. Keep the same convenience of a portable battery but enjoy 44% more thrust than the 3hp Torqeedo Travel S. The Torqeedo Travel XP is still light weight and portable, with the shaft weighing 28 pounds and the battery 21 pounds. The Travel XP battery has 1425 Wh of capacity, giving users about 47 minutes of run time at full power and about one hour and 34 minutes of run time at half power. Virtually silent, low maintenance, and direct emission free, the Torqeedo Travel XP is a great choice for boaters who have a larger boat or frequently encounter significant wind and current.

    Product Overview

Bigger boat? More challenging conditions? Look to the Power Package! The Travel XP forms the heart of the Power Package, and with 25% more thrust than the Travel, it has the grit to get the job done. At 1600 W of pure electric power, the Travel XP is the most powerful outboard with an integrated battery available from industrial production. This 5 HP-equivalent, high-thrust outboard is perfect for heavier boats up to 2 tons or more demanding applications, boating in coastal waters, or overcoming windy or wavy conditions. The ultra-quiet and reliable direct drive motor is lightweight and easy to handle at just 12.6 kg (27.8 lbs). It's easy to install and use, too, with a stable handle on the shaft head, a handy lever for quick steering adjustments (360° // ±60° // fixed), and flexible tilt and trim positions. Emission-free boating just powered up - experience the Travel XP today!

The battery is the core of an emission-free drive system, and the Travel XP's Power Package benefits from a whopping 1425 Wh integrated lithium pack that's still easy to handle at 9.6 kg (21 lbs). A click-and-play design means no more cables to connect, and a handy LED lets you know charge status at a glance, even when your battery is not connected. Simply plug in to charge with the fast 180 W mains charger, charge directly from the boat with the 12V/24V charge cable, or even go solar with the solar charge cable and solar panels up to 200 Wp! Torqeedo has offered lithium battery-powered marine drives since 2005, and we offer the most comprehensive and integrated protection and safety concept for lithium batteries on the market. Charge into the future of marine mobility with the Power Package!

    Key Features

Power. The Torqeedo Travel XP has a power output of 1.6 kW, or 45% more power than the standard Torqeedo Travel (1.1 kW). The extra power makes the Travel XP a great choice for sailboats, dinghies and fishing boats that need more than 3 hp. Torqeedo rates the XP at 5 hp, but we think it is closer to 4 hp. This extra power won't push your dinghy along much faster, but it will allow you to keep your speed up when conditions get margin and you're fighting wind, waves or tide.

Cable Free Battery Connection. Unlike older versions of the Travel, there's no more cable to connect the motor battery. When you install the battery onto the Travel XP, making the physical connection also makes the power and data connection. This greatly reduces the risk of breaking the small data pins or corrosion on these pins, which was a common problem in older Travel models. Plus, the motor side of the connection has a built-in rubber cap to cover the connection when the battery isn't installed, and both sides of the connection come from the factory with dielectric grease on them.

Multiple Tilt Positions. The Torqeedo Travel XP has four different shallow water tilt positions; the last version of the Travel and many other electric outboards have none! These positions ensure easy, safe use in shallow water and help prevent groundings and damage to the electric outboard. There are also two out of water tilt positions, the highest of which is 90 degrees, all but ensuring that the motor is completely out of the water when it's tilted up.

Upgraded Color Display. The new display is color and much easier to read than the smaller black and white displays of older electric outboards, plus it has a built-in GPS. It has three different screens, each of which shows a different combination of range in time and distance, state of charge, power output, RPMs, and speed.

App & User Installable Software Updates. The Travel XP has Bluetooth built-in! Downloading the Torqeedo app allows you to connect your motor to your phone. On the app, you can see things like past trips and usage data. Plus, if Torqeedo releases a software update, you can download it to your phone, then transfer it to your motor. Most other electric outboards require you to bring it to a dealer for an update.

Upgraded Built-In Tiller. Older Torqeedo Travel models had a separate tiller that needed to be plugged into the motor before each use. The Travel XP has a built-in tiller that can be raised up to about 80 degrees or dropped down to about -90 degrees. You can also adjust the resistance needed to move the tiller up and down; by tightening the tiller, you can have it stay in any position you'd like.

Easy Steering Lock & Unlock. No more pin under the battery. To lock and unlock your steering (a key feature for sailors who want to use their boat's rudder to steer) simply slide a tab on the aft side of the shaft up or down. Plus, there's a third steering option, which prevents the motor from turning more than 60 degrees to either side. Most non-sailors will find this option most appealing; rarely do you need to turn the Travel XP more than 60 degrees while in use. Then, when you pull it up out of the water, the weight of the battery makes the motor want to turn and the tiller to point straight up, but since it can't turn more than 60 degrees, this doesn't happen.

    Torqeedo Travel XP FAQ

How much faster is the Torqeedo Travel XP compared to the standard Torqeedo Travel?

It depends on the boat, but generally the difference is minimal. In our testing on a small inflatable dinghy, the difference in top speed was only about half of a mile per hour between the standard Torqeedo Travel and Travel XP. On larger, heavier boats, there is likely a more meaningful difference in top speed. Watch our full comparison video here.

Why does the Travel XP have less range than the standard Travel?

The answer to this comes down to power output and battery capacity. You can calculate theoretical run time by dividing the battery capacity in watt hours by power output in watts. If you only make these calculations at maximum power output for both motors, the standard Torqeedo Travel does have more range/run time. But if you compare a standard Travel with the standard Travel battery to a Travel XP with the Travel Battery XP at the same power output, the Travel XP has more range/run time because it has a higher capacity battery.

Are there cavitation issues with the Travel XP?

A small percentage of customers who purchase a Torqeedo Travel XP for use on small, light-weight dinghies have experienced cavitation issues. The vast majority of these issues are solved by replacing the standard propeller with the weedless propeller. Torqeedo is aware of this issue and is working towards both retroactive and proactive solutions.

Are there multiple battery options? Can I use third party or larger external batteries?

In short, no. The Torqeedo Travel XP is designed to be used with only the Travel Battery XP. You can connect the standard Travel Battery, but your power output will be limited to that of the standard Travel (1.1 kW / 3 hp). You cannot use third party batteries or larger external Torqeedo batteries with the Travel XP.

Are the propeller, fin and anode preinstalled?

Unfortunately, no. For reasons we do not understand, Torqeedo does not install the propeller, fin or anode at the factory, and the motor fits in the packaging in a way that prevents us from installing these parts before shipping the motors to customers. You'll need an Allen key and deep socket set to install these parts, and ideally a torque wrench to get the proper tightness for the propeller nut and anode. Inexpensive versions of these wrenches can be purchased on Amazon. For local customers who are picking up their motors in person, we can preinstall these parts for an additional fee.

Should I buy the standard Torqeedo Travel or Travel XP?

It depends on your use case. If you have a light weight dinghy, sailboat under 1000 pounds, or typically operate in calm conditions, the standard Torqeedo Travel is likely the best choice. The Torqeedo Travel XP will move your boat faster, but this difference will be marginal. The main benefit of the extra power on one of these boats is the ability to keep your speed up when conditions are margin and you are fighting wind, waves or current.

If you have a fiberglass or large dinghy, sailboat over 1000 pounds, or typically fight wind, waves, or tide, the Travel XP is likely a better choice.

    Charging Options & Duration

There are three charging options for the Travel Battery XP: the standard AC charger, 12v DC charger, and solar charge controller. Most customers choose the standard AC charger, although the solar and 12v options can be nice to have, especially for cruising sailors or customers who keep their boat on a mooring. Check out this video, where we explain the three different options.

    • Standard AC charger. The standard charger for the Travel Battery XP is 180W, comes in the box with the Travel XP shaft, and plugs in to a standard wall outlet. It takes about 8 hours to charge the Travel Battery XP from 0% to 100% with the standard charger.
    • 12/24v DC Charger. The DC charger itself is actually built into the battery, so this charger is simply a cable that plugs in to a standard 12v (or 24v) outlet on one side and the Travel Battery XP on the other side. Exact duration of DC charge time varies by power output of the 12v outlet, but duration for a full charge will be at least 14 hours. This charging cable is a great option for cruising sailors and live aboard boaters who want to charge their Travel Battery XP without starting a generator or running an inverter.
    • Solar Charging Cable. Like the DC charging cable, the Travel Solar Charging Cable is just a cable that connects to the battery on one end and has standard MC4 solar connectors on the other. It can be used with most solar panels up to 200W. Charge time varies significantly depending on the size of the panel, angle of the panel to the sun, and cloud cover. In our testing with a 100W panel angled at the sun on a cloudless day, we were charging at 70W or about 5% per hour. It's fair to assume this would jump to about 140W or 10% per hour with a 200W panel. Real world charging times will likely be slower.
