EMO Electric was founded in 2022 by T.R. Ludwig and Luke Hickling. T.R. is the CEO and Co-Founder of Brooklyn Solar Works, a solar installation company in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to starting Brooklyn Solar Works, T.R. held various management and executive roles at solar and IT companies. T.R. received his MBA from the Maastricht School of Management in the Netherlands, and was among the first solar professionals in the United States to become NABCEP Technical Sales certified.
Luke Hickling is the owner of Moriches Island Sailing, which offers sailing and motor boat lessons and charters during the summers in the Hamptons. Luke holds a 100 Ton USCG Master's Captain's license and a RYA Yachtmasters Offshore, a British Captain's license for sailing yachts up to 200GT. Prior to starting Moriches Island Sailing and EMO Electric, Luke taught sailing at the Westhampton Yacht Squadron (WYS) in the summers and worked on superyachts in the winters. From the experience Luke gained working on yachts and maintaining the boats at WYS as well as his own, Luke is able to perform most aspects of boat maintenance and repair, including fiberglass and electrical work.
Luke and T.R. met in 2021 when they became neighbors, after T.R. and his family purchased a home on Long Island, in East Moriches. T.R. was eager to take advantage of the bay in his new back yard and hired Luke to teach him how to use his recently purchased Trophy Bayliner, which was powered by a two stroke outboard at the time. T.R. loved spending time on the water, but certainly did not love the old, loud and dirty motor that powered his boat. As an environmentalist, solar professional, and electric vehicle enthusiast, he knew that there was a cleaner, more reliable and more sustainable way to move around the bay.
T.R. spent countless hours researching ways that he could repower his boat with an electric outboard, or build a new, purpose-built electric boat altogether. While there were a few companies manufacturing electric outboards, T.R. couldn't find a company to help him choose the most appropriate electric outboard for his boat and install the motor; he had to do all of the research and project management himself.
Realizing the need for a company that specialized in electric outboard procurement and installation, T.R. approached Luke with the idea and EMO Electric was born! Between T.R.’s experience in renewable energy, Luke’s in the marine industry, and their shared experience as entrepreneurs, EMO Electric is well suited to succeed in electric marine propulsion. EMO Electric also contracts with licensed marine electricians and marine mechanics when necessary.
At this time, EMO Electric is a dealer for Torqeedo, Elco, and ePropulsion, and plans to offer electric outboards from other manufacturers as new companies bring their outboards to market. EMO Electric can help you choose a small engine for your dinghy or sailboat, repower your boat with an electric outboard, integrate solar charging into your marina or home, and even help you design and fabricate your own custom-built electric boat!
