The Momentum M10 is the first and only portable 10kW / 20hp electric outboard on the market-- if you're looking for an electric solution for a planing dinghy or small boat, look no further; the Momentum M10 is the right choice. The M10 has a separate transom bracket and just one cable that connects the motor to the Momentum MB-6 battery, making it quick and easy to remove the motor and battery from your boat. At slower speeds of about 6mph, the M10 can run for ~5 hours when paired with one MB-6 battery, and at planning speeds, run time is about an hour and twenty minutes.

Momentum M10 Overview

The Momentum M10 by Momentum Electric Marine is a 10kW / 20hp electric outboard that's perfect for customers who want an electric outboard for their dinghy, but still want to get up on the plane. It's also a great choice for larger boats who need more power but still want the portability and easy installation of a small electric outboard. The Momentum M10 provides the power you're used to with all the benefits of electric.

Constructed with primarily metal, not plastic, the Momentum M10 electric outboard is built to stand up to a harsh marine environment. Yet it's still portable enough to take on and off of your boat with ease. The motor features and transom bracket that's designed to stay on your transom, but the outboard itself comes off easily. It's the first truly plug and play system in the 10kW / 20hp power rating, with just one cable that connects the battery to the electric outboard, which includes both power and data connections. The Momentum M10 is versatile and can be used with up to four Momentum MB-6 6.4kWh batteries, or third party batteries, as long as the system voltage reaches 72v.

The runtime of the Momentum M10 with just one Momentum MB-6.4kWh battery is enough for most boaters with a dinghy. In Momentum Electric Marine's testing on a small RIB, they found that one battery gave the M10 80 minutes of run time on the plane and 4 hours and 30 minutes of run time at 6.4mph.

Momentum M10 - Key Features

Power & Portability. Most electric outboards around the 10kW / 20hp size range are designed to be permanently installed in a boat, making them a poor choice for dinghies and some small fishing boats. The M10 was designed with portability at its core, making it the clear winner for any boater who wants serious power and a portable propulsion system.

Single Cable Connection. Most electric outboards over 3kw / 6hp have three cables that run between the motor and battery: a positive and negative power cable and a data cable. That isn't the same with the Momentum M10; there's one cable that runs between the motor and battery which houses both power and data. Want to remove the battery or motor? You don't need tools, you don't have to undo ring terminals on unscrew data cables, simply remove the cable from the motor and battery by hand.

Separate Transom Bracket. Like most modern electric outboards, the Momentum M10 has a separate transom bracket that's designed to live on your transom or motor mount. Not only does this reduce the weight you need to handle at once, but it saves time and energy whenever you need to remove your motor.

Energy Dense Battery. At 81.4 pounds, Momentum MB-6 battery isn't light weight, but it's Li-Ion NMC chemistry provides serious energy density. With 6.4kWh of capacity, the MB-6 battery weighs 12.7 pounds per kWh. For comparison, one of Momentum's competitor's batteries weighs 72.6 pounds and has a 3 kWh capacity, or 24.2 pounds per kWh.

Durable Construction. There's very little plastic used in the construction of the Momentum M10. This is a new motor and new company; only time will tell how durable Momentum's equipment is, but after using, touching and feeling the M10, we fell that it is a very well built motor with engineering behind it.

Momentum M10 FAQ

What's the range of the Momentum M10?

Like all electric outboards, the range of the Momentum M10 depends on your speed. As tested on a Highfield 310 Classic, the run time at full power is about 40 minutes with a speed of 18.6mph. At a planing speed of 13.7mph, the run time is about 80 minutes. At a slow speed of about 6.4 mph, the run time is about 4 hours and 30 minutes. More run time data is below.

How much does the Momentum M10 Electric Outboard cost?

At the time of this writing, the cost of a Momentum M10 complete package is $11,398. Without the battery, the cost is $6,399.

Can you connect more than one MB-6 Battery to the Momentum M10?

Yes, it is possible to use up to four MB-6 Batteries with a Momentum M10 electric outboard.

Can you use third party batteries with the Momentum M10?

Yes, but you'll need to purchase a the Momentum third party battery adapter and ensure that the rated voltage is 72v and that the batteries provide a continuous power output of 150A. If you are planning to use the Momentum M10 in a dinghy, we highly recommend using the MB-6 battery. Boats that have space to store batteries in an area protected from the elements may be better suited to use third party batteries.

Does the Momentum MB-6 Battery overheat or limit power output?

Momentum Electric Marine is based in Singapore, where they do their testing. They have had not seen any issues with overheating in that climate or with any customers to date. When the battery capacity drops below 20%, power output starts to become limited. Not only does this protect the battery from damage, but it also helps ensure that you have enough range to get home.

Can you lock the steering on the Momentum M10?

No, but you can easily tighten the steering friction so that the motor stays centered when you take your hand off of the tiller.

How does the Momentum M6 differ from the Momentum M10 electric outboard?

The two motors are almost identical with the exception of the maximum power output, which is 6kW on the M6 and 10kW on the M10.
