Torqeedo was the first company to make a portable electric outboard over 20 years ago, and they're still going strong! This new version of the Torqeedo Travel has serious improvements from the older 1103, including a cable-free battery connection, built in tiller, multiple tilt angles, easy steering lock/unlock and Bluetooth connectivity for updates & more. At 1.1 kW / 3 hp, the Torqeedo Travel is a great choice for small sailboats and dinghies.

Product Overview

The newest version of the iconic Torqeedo Travel isn't just a facelift; Torqeedo has made meaningful improvements that remind us why they're the Travel is one of the best selling electric outboards in the world. The tiller is built in and the battery connection is cable free, eliminating all cables and reducing the risk of pins breaking or corroding. Plus, there are no more battery / steering lock pins to drop overboard.

The Torqeedo Travel has a 1.1kW / 3 hp motor, making it a popular choice for dinghies and small sailboats. The Travel has about an hour of run time at full power with the standard battery, but if you need more range, you can purchase the motor with Travel Battery XP, which has ~40% more capacity. Read below for our favorite features, range data, and more!

Key Features

Cable Free Battery Connection. Unlike older versions of the Travel, there's no more cable to connect the motor battery. When you install the battery onto the Travel, making the physical connection also makes the power and data connection. This greatly reduces the risk of breaking the small data pins or corrosion on these pins, which was a common problem in older Travel models. Plus, the motor side of the connection has a built-in rubber cap to cover the connection when the battery isn't installed, and both sides of the connection come from the factory with dielectric grease on them.

Multiple Tilt Positions. The Torqeedo Travel has four different shallow water tilt positions; the last version of the Travel and many other electric outboards have none! These positions ensure easy, safe use in shallow water and help prevent groundings and damage to the electric outboard. There are also two out of water tilt positions, the highest of which is 90 degrees, all but ensuring that the motor is completely out of the water when it's tilted up.

Upgraded Color Display. The new display is color and much easier to read than the smaller black and white displays of older electric outboards, plus it has a built-in GPS. It has three different screens, each of which shows a different combination of range in time and distance, state of charge, power output, RPMs, and speed.

App & User Installable Software Updates. The Torqeedo Travel has Bluetooth built-in! Downloading the Torqeedo app allows you to connect your motor to your phone. On the app, you can see things like past trips and usage data. Plus, if Torqeedo releases a software update, you can download it to your phone, then transfer it to your motor. Most other electric outboards require you to bring it to a dealer for an update.

Upgraded Built-In Tiller. Older Torqeedo Travel models had a separate tiller that needed to be plugged into the motor before each use. The new Travel has a built-in tiller that can be raised up to about 80 degrees or dropped down to about -90 degrees. You can also adjust the resistance needed to move the tiller up and down; by tightening the tiller, you can have it stay in any position you'd like.

Easy Steering Lock & Unlock. No more pin under the battery. To lock and unlock your steering (a key feature for sailors who want to use their boat's rudder to steer) simply slide a tab on the aft side of the shaft up or down. Plus, there's a third steering option, which prevents the motor from turning more than 60 degrees to either side. Most non-sailors will find this option most appealing; rarely do you need to turn the Travel more than 60 degrees while in use. Then, when you pull it up out of the water, the weight of the battery makes the motor want to turn and the tiller to point straight up, but since it can't turn more than 60 degrees, this doesn't happen.

Travel Options

Battery. There are two battery options for the 1.1 kW / 3hp Torqeedo Travel. The Essential package includes the standard Travel Battery, which is 1080Wh, provides about one hour of run time at full power and weighs 19 pounds. The Range package includes the Travel Battery XP, which is 1440Wh, provides about an hour and 20 minutes of run time at full power, and weighs 23 pounds. It is not possible to use the Torqeedo Travel with third party or larger Torqeedo batteries.

Shaft length. The Torqeedo is available in two shaft lengths, short and long. The short shaft version is ideal for a 15" transom; most dinghies have a transom around this height. The long shaft is ideal for a 20" transom and is more common for sailboats. Please contact us if you have any questions about shaft length! Keep in mind that shaft length is measured differently between gas and electric.

Torqeedo Travel FAQ

Are there multiple battery options? Can I use third party or larger external batteries?

Unfortunately the Torqeedo Travel is not compatible with external or third party batteries; the two options are the standard Travel Battery or larger Travel Battery XP. If you need more range, you can always purchase a second battery.

Should I buy the standard Travel Battery / Essential Package or the larger Travel Battery XP / Range Package?

The standard Travel Battery provides enough range for a day of boating for most customers, although more customers than not choose to purchase the Travel Battery XP / range package. Keep in mind that you should plan to keep 20% of your battery capacity as a reserve. Not only is this prudent to make sure you can always get back to where you came from, avoiding running the battery down below 20% on a regular basis helps the longevity of the battery.

Is Torqeedo going to release a new version of the Travel soon?

While we can't know for sure (they don't give dealers much advanced warning) we don't expect that Torqeedo will update the Travel in the near future, as this version arrived in the US in 2024.

Are the propeller, fin and anode preinstalled?

Unfortunately, no. For reasons we do not understand, Torqeedo does not install the propeller, fin or anode at the factory, and the motor fits in the packaging in a way that prevents us from installing these parts before shipping the motors to customers. You'll need an Allen key and deep socket set to install these parts, and ideally a torque wrench to get the proper tightness for the propeller nut and anode. Inexpensive versions of these wrenches can be purchased on Amazon. For local customers who are picking up their motors in person, we can preinstall these parts for an additional fee.

What's the warranty period on the Torqeedo Travel?

The Torqeedo Travel comes with a two year warranty, which starts the day of the purchase.

How much faster is the Torqeedo Travel XP compared to the standard Torqeedo Travel?

It depends on the boat, but generally the difference is minimal. In our testing on a small inflatable dinghy, the difference in top speed was only about half of a mile per hour between the standard Torqeedo Travel and Travel XP. On larger, heavier boats, there is likely a more meaningful difference in top speed. Watch our full comparison video here.

Should I buy the standard Torqeedo Travel or Travel XP?

It depends on your use case. If you have a light weight dinghy, sailboat under 1000 pounds, or typically operate in calm conditions, the standard Torqeedo Travel is likely the best choice. The Torqeedo Travel XP will move your boat faster, but this difference will be marginal. The main benefit of the extra power on one of these boats is the ability to keep your speed up when conditions are margin and you are fighting wind, waves or current.

If you have a fiberglass or large dinghy, sailboat over 1000 pounds, or typically fight wind, waves, or tide, the Travel XP is likely a better choice.

Charging Options & Duration

There are three charging options for the Travel Battery and Travel Battery XP: the standard AC charger, 12v DC charger, and solar charge controller. These chargers are the same for both batteries. Most customers choose the standard AC charger, although the solar and 12v options can be nice to have, especially for cruising sailors or customers who keep their boat on a mooring. Check out this video, where we explain the three different options.

  • Standard AC charger. The standard charger for the Travel Batteries is 180W, comes in the box with the Travel XP shaft, and plugs in to a standard wall outlet. It takes about 8 hours to charge the Travel Battery XP from 0% to 100% with the standard charger and about 6 hours for the standard Travel Battery.
  • 12/24v DC Charger. The DC charger itself is actually built into the battery, so this charger is simply a cable that plugs in to a standard 12v (or 24v) outlet on one side and the Travel Battery on the other side. Exact duration of DC charge time varies by power output of the 12v outlet, but duration for a full charge will be at least 14 hours for the Travel Battery XP and 12 for the Travel Battery. This charging cable is a great option for cruising sailors and live aboard boaters who want to charge their Travel Battery XP without starting a generator or running an inverter.
  • Solar Charging Cable. Like the DC charging cable, the Travel Solar Charging Cable is just a cable that connects to the battery on one end and has standard MC4 solar connectors on the other. It can be used with most solar panels up to 200W. Charge time varies significantly depending on the size of the panel, angle of the panel to the sun, and cloud cover. In our testing with a 100W panel angled at the sun on a cloudless day, we were charging at 70W or about 5% per hour for the Travel Battery XP. It's fair to assume this would jump to about 140W or 10% per hour with a 200W panel. Real world charging times will likely be slower.
